Sunday August 7

“A Needful Time Needs Prayer”
 (Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Timothy 2:1-8)

This communion Sunday will not be a preaching Sunday, but a time of prayer with praise and thanksgiving, much confession, lots of intercession and petition, and needful listening: for each of us as individuals, for all of us as a congregation, and for our denomination…and perhaps a new one.

July 31: “My Walk as a United Methodist Pastor” (Isaiah 24:6-7; 42:9-10; 1 Timothy 4:6-16; 6:3-5, 11-16; Hebrews 11:1; Revelation 2:1-7)

Today’s message flows from a heavy but hopeful heart about my up and down journey as a pastor in the UMC regards the good and not-so-good of our denomination, and how that may or may not impact the choices the members of Cornwall UMC likely face.

July 24: “The Lord Hates a Coward” (Judges 6:33-40, as well as other sections of chapters 7-8; Matthew 28: 19-20; Romans 1:1; 12:1)

Rob Donley grew up at Cornwall UMC, and today returns as a guest preacher. He will initially share about his ministry with “Friends in Action”, a mission we now support. Then he will preach a sermon which observes that God never blessed anyone who did not step out in faith when the Lord commanded someone to do so; on the contrary, God many times said, “Do not be afraid”, and asks us to trust Him. Come listen to a message which will identify the incredible things which happen when people lay aside their fears and trust the Lord completely!

July 17: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Series, #4 of 10—“Give It a Rest” (Exodus 20:8-11;Deuteronomy 5:12-15; Isaiah 58:13-14; Matthew 11:28-30; Mark 2:23-28; Colossians 2:16-17;3:22; Hebrews 4:9-10)

The irony is not lost on me that the day that’s been set aside as a day of rest is for me my most important work day! What do we mean about this day of rest (which nowadays is chock full of a bunch of other things, many of them exhausting)? Come on out and lets figure it out.

July 10: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Series, #3 of 10—“What’s in a Name?” (Exodus3:13-15; 20:7; Psalm 8:1, 9; 29:2; 103:1-2; Matthew 5:33-37; Ephesians 4: 29; Philippians 2:9-11; Colossians 3:8)
The third commandment isn’t just frequently broken, but also frequently misunderstood. It’s not only difficult to “watch our tongue”, but also to understand the core meaning of this verse, when a bunch of other bad language issues expands its meaning beyond the core. What am I getting at? Well, why don’t you come hear it, you @#$%^&*!!!

July 03: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Series, #2 of 10 “Who’s in the Driver’s Seat?”(Exodus 20:4-6; 32:1-10; Matthew 10:37)
Today’s message flows directly from last week’s; it’s as if the first and most important commandment needed to be repeated in an alternate way. Of course, so many of the idols in the Bible were physical in nature, and thought of as divine beings. In today’s culture—where there are far more idols than ever before—we don’t think of them as divine, but we definitely give them a place in our hearts and minds far above the LORD. Come and see how.

June 26: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS Series, #1 of 10—“There’s Only Room for One”(Exodus 20:1-3; Psalm 89:6-8; 92:4; 95:6-7a; 150:3-6a; Isaiah 40:25-26; Lamentations 3:22-23

Pastor Tim returns returns. This message will make clear that the top priority in life—above everything else and central to all we do—is our relationship with and our worship of God as LORD. It’ll begin with a brief introduction to the Ten Commandments, and then identify the five most popular gods in America (they’re broader than you think!). The rest of the sermon will make clear why “there’s only room for one”, because there’s really no comparison!

June 19: FATHER’S DAY—“Father in Heaven and Fathers on Earth” (Luke 11:1-4)
Our new this year Lay Leader—Jeff Starner—will preach this Sunday on a quite
appropriate Father’s Day theme! It celebrates that we all have two fathers: a heavenly One and an earthly one. Let’s honor our Father God by coming and listening to this message!

June 12: “Go, Therefore, and Make Disciples” (Matthew 28)
The July missionary we support—T. J. Renninger—will be our guest preacher this week; he and his wife share ministry with Disciple Makers on the Penn State main campus. T. J.’s message is entitled fittingly, as you can see above; he’ll be asking some challenging questions: “What is our response to the resurrection? Are we just to remain idle, or is there something more?”
